چکیده

During recent years the determination of the protein-bound iodine (PBI) in the serum or plasma has been used with increasing frequency as a diagnostic aid. Various limits have been suggested for the serum PBI concentration in euthyroidism. The range most frequently recorded in the literature is from 4 to 8 gamma per cent of PBI. These values are not fiducial expressions of full statistical analyses of adequate numbers of persons; they are based on observations made by several groups of workers on limited numbers of persons judged to be euthyroid but otherwise not fully characterized (Table I). Study on the effect of high calcium intake on serum protein bound iodine and urinary excretion of iodine

Iodine deficiency remains a major health problem in the world, including some parts of Iran. It has been recognized that there is usually a close and inverse relationship between iodine in the soil and water and presence of endemic goiter. Calcium has been suggested as one of goitrogens, though the definite role, extent and mechanism particularly in human have not been studied. Serum protein-...

The effect of oral iodide on serum butanol-insoluble protein-bound iodine in various species.

It is possible that there is an association between the butanol-insoluble protein-bound iodine developed in plasma when potassium iodide is fed and the reduction of serum and hepatic cholesterol. This fraction constitutes most of the protein-bound iodine increase observed in iodide-fed rabbits, dogs, rats and hypertensive human beings. It appears a few days after iodide feeding is begun and dis...

Protein-bound iodine of the blood serum in leprosy.

The protein-bound iodine of the blood serum has acquired clinical importance in recent years because of the development of chemical methods for the detection and quantitative estimation of minute quantities of organic iodine in the blood. Its determination is of value because its concentration usually parallels that of the circulating thyroid hormone. In chronic infections with fever, and in ch...

Normal Range of Serum Butanol-Extractable Iodine of Human Adults *

In the diagnosis of masked hyperthyroidism, measurement of the serum precipitable iodine (SPI) (frequently also called protein-bound iodine [PBI]) has gained significance. Since 1951 determination of thyroxine-like or butanol-extractable iodine (BEI) has been the routine procedure in this laboratory.' This chemical tool is more specific than the PBI in the diagnosis of thyroid dysfunction. Not ...

SERUM CONCENTRATIONS OF VARIOUS HORMONES FOLLOWING EXPOSURE TO CHEMICAL WEAPONS CONTAINING SULFUR MUSTARD

Serum concentration of FSH, LH, testosterone, prolactin, ACTH, cortisol, TSH, T4, T3 and resin T3 uptake were measured in 146 men who were exposed to vesicants used by the Iraqi regime a few days t04 weeks prior to testing. Clinical and laboratory findings had confirmed the use of mustard gas. Mean serum concentrations of FSH, LH, TSH and prolactin were not significantly different from no...
